In this episode of Chasing the Insights, I talk to legendary voice performer Eric Jason Martin.

Eric talks to us about collaborating with A-list talent to grow and challenge yourself.

Eric Jason Martin is a producer, director, author, and voice performer. He is the AudioFile Earphones and Audie Award–winning narrator of over 350 audiobooks, including works by Kurt Vonnegut, David Foster Wallace, Karin Slaughter, and Lee Child.

He has also narrated over 450 feature articles for the New York Times and Audm, including Michael Chabon’s stories for the New Yorker, as well as stories for Wired, The Atlantic, and Rolling Stone.

Eric has created a number of original audio productions. In 2016, he produced a documentary of Tenacious D for Stitcher Premium, featuring Jack Black and Kyle Gass. Later that year, he and Justin Michael co- wrote and co-directed the original scripted audio series Hoot Gibson: Vegas Cowboy, starring Andy Daly, and featuring Weird Al Yankovic, Rachel Bloom, and Paul F. Tompkins. In 2018, he re-teamed with Justin Michael to create the fully-improvised Audible Original Bad Reception, also starring D’Arcy Carden, Kyle Mooney, Lauren Lapkus, Nicole Byer, and many more.

In 2018, Eric produced, directed, and narrated the Audible Original Stinker Lets Loose!, written by Mike Sacks. The audiobook was a New York Times Monthly Bestseller, starring Jon Hamm, Rhea Seehorn, and Philip Baker Hall. For the release, the show’s cast reunited in San Francisco to perform a sold-out live performance for SF Sketchfest. Eric re-teamed with Sacks for the Audible Original Passable in Pink in 2019, starring Gillian Jacobs, Adam Scott, Bobby Moynihan, and Bob Odenkirk.

He directed and co-starred in the musical comedy series Heads Will Roll for Broadway Video and Audible, created by and starring Kate McKinnon and Emily Lynne, also starring Meryl Streep and Peter Dinklage. Eric also directed and co-starred in Maximum Fun’s scripted fiction podcast Bubble, written by Jordan Morris, featuring John Hodgman, Judy Greer, and original songs from Jonathan Coulton and Lisa Loeb. The show received the Best of the Year award from Apple, and is now in development as an animated feature film with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures.

In 2021, Eric published his debut novel, New Arcadia: Stage One. The multi-cast audiobook was a #2 Audible Bestseller in Fiction. New Arcadia: Revolution is his second novel, and is now available on Amazon, Audible, and Apple Books. He lives in Pasadena, CA.
